At present, the following documents must be presented in order to have the pet animal released when it enters Malta.

1) THE PET TRAVEL SCHEME
a) Pet Passport from EU countries.
This is a booklet issued by the Competent Veterinary Authorities of Malta or of any other EU country. In this booklet would be all the details necessary for the pet to travel. Within this booklet are the details of the owner; the details of the pet; the details of the microchip; the details of the rabies vaccination; details of the sieroneutralization titre test results for rabies and details of the echinococcus and tick treatment. Besides, within this booklet are the details of the other vaccinations administered to the pet. The pet passport is signed and stamped by a government veterinarian. All the certificates must be made available together with the pet passport.
b) Certificates from third countries.
All third countries do not produce an EU pet passport; therefore it is essential that all the required documentation is made available when the pet enters the country. It is necessary that the pet would possess the following documents: Details of the microchip; Rabies vaccination, the result of the sieroneutralisation titre test for rabies; confirmation of the administration of the tick and echinococcus treatment. Besides, it is required to obtain a health certificate from a veterinarian stating that the pet is healthy and fit to travel.
2) THE DECLARATION OF RESIDENCE
The owner must fill in a form to declare that his/her pet animal has not been outside the Pet Travel Scheme qualifying countries during the last six months prior to the pet animal's entry in Malta. Where flying to Malta from a Rabies-free island, this declaration may still be signed as long as the pet animals has not left the confines of the airport during transit or stopover in a qualifying country. This form can be filled in when the pet animal is presented for checking.
Pet animals entering Malta with a Pet Travel Scheme Certificate which have been outside the qualifying countries during the last six months prior to the pet animal's entry in Malta will have to be quarantined for six months.
